1983
The concept for Hill Physicians Medical Group is developed by co-founders Darryl Cardoza and Steve McDermott in the San Ramon kitchen of their first Executive Assistant Esther Farnstrom. The organization is incorporated on Dec. 27, 1983.

1984
The first meeting of the Board of Directors takes place Sept. 10 at Samuel Merritt Hospital. The first item of business is the appointment of the initial directors of the corporation, by its incorporators, Paul Smith, M.D., and Richard McCann, president and CEO of Merritt Peralta Medical Center.

1985
PriMed Management Consulting Services is incorporated on Oct. 4, 1984, to partner with Hill Physicians Medical Group. The company begins operations on the first floor of a two-story structure at 2401 Crow Canyon Road, which housed other businesses. The site today is home of the San Ramon Police Department.

1990
We open a regional office in Sacramento offering HMO plans, significantly increasing the organization’s geographic footprint not only throughout Sacramento but also into Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Yolo and Solano counties.

1994
Hill Physicians expands ito San Francisco and establishes partnerships with St. Mary’s Medical Center and Saint Francis Memorial Hospital to provide inpatient support.

1995
Hill Physicians becomes available through HMOs to Medicare patients, leading to significant growth in membership.

1997
Our physician network grows to 2,500, with 700 primary care doctors and 1,800 specialists. The annual report highlights 15 years of consistent growth and expansion.

We launch www.HillPhysicians.com, which remains in use to this day (and has been upgraded several times since).

2003
Hill Physicians focuses on growth and technology as its physician network expands to more than 2,100 physicians and serves more than 330,000 residents in Northern California.

2004
Delta IPA merges with Hill Physicians and opens an office in Stockton. The merger brings 700 new physicians to the network and more than 70,000 new members.

2005
As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, revenue reaches $414 million and physicians number 2,600 at 1,300 locations.

We complete the rollout of NextGen, an electronic medical records solution to enhance patient care, improve convenience and ensure adherence to best practices and clinical protocols.

Hill Physicians introduces Ascender, a software program designed to identify patients in need of important screenings or tests, helping us better manage patient care.

2008
Hill Physicians serves Medi-Cal patients for the first time, partnering with Health Net and Anthem Blue Cross in Sacramento, adding 5,000 members.

Hill Physicians and PriMed relocate headquarters to 2409 Camino Ramon in Bishop Ranch.

Longtime Chairman of the Board of Directors Arthur Stanten retires after 18 years.

2009
Hill Physicians announces a long-term strategic relationship with UCSF Health, with 500 physicians and 100 additional community physicians affiliating with Hill Physicians.

The company launches a groundbreaking collaboration in Sacramento with Dignity Hospitals (formerly Catholic Healthcare West’s Mercy hospitals) and Blue Shield of California to develop an innovative model for quality care and cost containment for CalPERS members.

2010
Hill Physicians enters into the CalPERS Accountable Care Organization (ACO), the first of many ACO relationships to come. The initiative delivers exceptional care while keeping premiums flat for 40,000 CalPERS members in the Sacramento area. It is later hailed as one of the first ACOs in the nation.

2011
Hill Physicians establishes an ACO with the city and county of San Francisco (San Francisco Health Service System), partnering with Blue Shield of California, Dignity Health and UCSF Medical Center.

2012
Steve McDermott retires as CEO, and co-founder Darryl Cardoza steps up as CEO. The board approves a $60 million capital investment plan to support long-term initiatives for future growth, with projects to upgrade technology and infrastructure.

2013
Hill Physicians announces plans to launch an ACO in San Joaquin and another commercial ACO in Sacramento. Hill Physicians revenue surpasses $500 million for the first time.

2014
Founding owners of PriMed Management Consulting Services sell their shares. Ownership is transferred to Hill Physicians, Dignity Health, Anthem Blue Cross of California and Blue Shield of California.

2015
Darryl Cardoza retires as CEO and David Joyner transitions from COO to CEO.

Hill Physicians takes on PPO patients by partnering with United Healthcare and other PPO health plans follow.

Hill Physicians opens Hill Health, its first clinic with employed physicians, solidifying our primary care presence in the heart of Oakland.

2016
Hill Physicians launches Hill Metrics using Cozeva, a platform that gathers patient data and simplifies condition documentation and scheduling of screenings.

We reach 100,000 PPO-attributed members.

Hill Physicians is the only organization in Northern California to participate in the CMS ACO model known as the “Next Generation ACO Model.”

Hill Physicians develops its own proprietary analytics model to predict members at the highest risk of hospitalization, so care teams can intervene and engage members to proactively prevent hospitalizations.

2017
Hill Physicians rolls out the Epic Electronic Medical Record, known as Hill Chart, replacing NextGen.

We expand into Grass Valley, adding 170 primary care, specialty and ancillary providers.

2018
Hill Physicians launches its first PPO Clinically Integrated Network (CIN) with Health Net in Sacramento, with other CINs to follow. Providers in our CIN agree to share data, adhere to common quality and efficiency standards and demonstrate value to payers and patients.

We expand our Population Health program, which includes care management, pharmacy and clinical quality, to include new health navigation services.

2019
We form our Community Health Advocate (CHA) Program to address patients’ health-related social needs, as part of our Population Health efforts to expand and enhance the care experience.

The number of physicians in our network surpasses 4,500, and coverage extends to 11 Northern California counties.

2020
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hill Physicians becomes a lifeline for many of our independent practices. Highlights of our support include securing and distributing nearly 1.1 million pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as well as $20 million in relief funds.

Hill Physicians is awarded a Restricted Knox-Keene License, allowing our organization to take global risk for Medicare Advantage patients in Sacramento, positioning us to secure the most attractive Medicare products in the region.

2022
We pilot our Virtual Care Network, offering online visits to patients within one to three days.

We successfully pilot two remote monitoring programs, one focused on hypertension and the other on diabetes.

2024
Hill Physicians celebrates its 40th anniversary of partnership with PriMed Management Consulting Services.

We set another record high for revenue at $831 million, with membership enrollment nearing 400,000 and the physician network surpassing 6,000 providers.

We partner with MarinHealth and enter Marin County and lower Sonoma county.
